Credible Research Designs for Minimum Wage Studies

چکیده
Credible Research Designs for Minimum Wage Studies We assess alternative research designs for minimum wage studies. States in the U.S. with larger minimum wage increases differ from others in business cycle severity, increased inequality and polarization, political economy, and regional distribution. The resulting timevarying heterogeneity biases the canonical two-way fixed effects estimator. We consider alternatives including border discontinuity designs, dynamic panel data models, and the synthetic control estimator. Results from four datasets and six approaches all suggest employment effects are small. Covariates are more similar in neighboring counties, and the synthetic control estimator assigns greater weights to nearby donors. These findings also support using local area controls. Credible Research Designs for Minimum Wage Studies: A Response to Neumark, Salas and Wascher
We assess the Neumark, Salas and Wascher (NSW) critique of our minimum wage findings. Recent studies, including one by NSW, obtain small employment elasticities for restaurants, -0.06 or less in magnitude. The substantive critique in NSW thus centers primarily upon teens. Using a longer (19792014) sample than used by NSW and in our own previous work, we find clear evidence that teen minimum wag...
متن کاملMinimum Wages and Employment
We review the burgeoning literature on the employment effects of minimum wages – in the United States and in other countries – that was spurred by the new minimum wage research beginning in the early 1990s. Our review indicates that there is a wide range of existing estimates and, accordingly, a lack of consensus about the overall effects on low-wage employment of an increase in the minimum wag...
متن کاملTurning a Blind Eye: Costly Enforcement, Credible Commitment and Minimum
In many countries, noncompliance with minimum wage legislation is widespread, and authorities may be seen as having turned a blind eye to a legislation they have themselves passed. We show that turning a blind eye can indeed be an equilibrium phenomenon with ex post credibility, in a model of minimum wage policy with imperfect competition, imperfect enforcement and imperfect commitment. Since c...
متن کاملMinimum Wages and Aggregate Job Growth: Causal Effect or Statistical Artifact?
Consistent with recent work by Meer and West, I find a negative association between minimum wages and state-level aggregate employment growth in both the Business Dynamics Statistics and the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages data, and it is sizable for some time periods. However, I show that this negative association is present in exactly the wrong sectors. It is particularly strong in m...
متن کاملآیا اثر افزایش حداقل دستمزدها بر تورم در اقتصاد ایران به وضعیت ادوار تجاری اقتصاد کلان مرتبط است؟
Over past decades there have been conflicting views on whether raising the minimum wage increases inflation. This study updates and expands earlier research into this subject and fills a void in the empirical literature by studying that the impacts of the minimum wage on inflation could be altered in the different economic situations. In framework of cost push inflation theoretical background, ...
